Garden Sheds – Choose The Right Outdoor Storage Shed For You

We all know that garden sheds can eliminate frustrations when it comes to trying to keep tools and gardening supplies organized. They’re quite possibly one of the most helpful additions to ones backyard. Unfortunately, due to poor planning and perhaps not enough instruction, many people end up with sheds that are either too large or too small for their needs.

People often purchase sheds that fall apart after only a few months or they spend far too much money on expensive structures that they never use. Well, we’re going to put a stop to the confusion. The following is an explanation of the few simple steps one should follow when purchasing a garden shed.

The most important thing to consider when installing a garden or storage shed is that you must check with the building codes office to find out about building permits in your area. Many people begin construction of a beautiful new shed, only to discover that it must be torn down because they have violated a building code.

Once you have received confirmation that you can build a shed and you know its size limitations, you can confidently begin building your shed. Of course, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Even before building your shed, there are a few things to be considered.

Choosing Between Wood, Metal Or Vinyl Storage Buildings

First, decide upon an appropriate size for your shed. Figure what will be stored inside of it and plan where it will be built. Second, choose a suitable type of material from which your shed will be built. Cedar and vinyl sheds tend to be most expensive, however they are also the most durable.

Vinyl is a popular choice for many people as it is virtually maintenance-free and will basically last forever. Cedar too, is extremely popular as is looks gorgeous and weathers well. Cedar contains natural resins that make it virtually rot-free, however it is not maintenance free. It will need a coat of UV inhibiting sealer once every couple of years to protect it from sun damage.

There are also steel, metal, plywood and particleboard sheds on the market, however they are not nearly as resilient as vinyl or cedar. You’ll find that although they are inexpensive, they will rust, rot and deteriorate quite quickly. Metal in particular should be avoided as it heats up quickly in hot weather. Thus, gasoline or other unstable liquids and fertilizers are unsafe when stored inside.

The final decision is, of course, up to you. The best advice when purchasing a storage building, shed or shed kit is to plan ahead and decide what your shed will be needed for and how long you will need it. Consider purchasing your shed from and online garden store as they definitely offer the best selection, customer service and prices available almost anywhere - even after you factor in shipping!  All online gardening stores carry shed kits which are easily shipped and easily assembled.

If you only require a shed for a single season, perhaps a less expensive steel one is your best option. On the other hand, if you plan to use your shed for years to come, a cedar or vinyl one is most likely your best choice, and make sure that it allows you 'room to grow'. In the end, your shed should suit your needs and preferences and make your life just a little bit easier.
