Backyard Shed – Create A Tranquil Private Getaway In Your Garden

Once upon a time, a backyard shed was a simple, generic structure; a useful place to store all the things you could no longer hoard in your garage. Unfortunately over time, sheds tend to be forgotten and are oftentimes left empty; their presence becomes an intrusion in your otherwise well-manicured backyard. Fortunately, a backyard shed can easily be renovated and turned into a lovely cottage, which can be used as a playhouse, guest suite or reading room! All it takes is a few upgrades and you can have yourself a stunning retreat right in your own backyard.

When renovating your backyard shed, think of its construction as you would the building of a house. Remember that it will need things such as solid roofing, siding, and flooring. You will also want to consider wiring it for electricity, especially if you plan to use it as a guest suite, or private getaway. Some people even install heating systems into their sheds, particularly if they plan to use them year-round.

Additionally, when you’re designing the exterior of your new backyard shed, try to match it with the style of your own home. Keep in mind that although the structure used to be a place where tools and equipment were stored, it is now going to be a home away from home, thus, a little continuity between it and your house will add elegance, style and character.

Another important detail to remember when renovating your backyard shed is its size. Not all sheds can be renovated as they will simply be too small for comfort. Most people have sheds that are approximately 8-by-12 feet, as this seems to be a good size for most people’s needs. If you have a smaller shed than this, consider re-building your shed from scratch as it will not serve you well as much more than perhaps a playhouse for kids.

Finally, whether you are renovating an older backyard shed or building one from scratch, you should decide whether you want to build it yourself or have it professionally constructed. For simpler outdoor sheds, it is quite easy and economical to do the work yourself. On the other hand, if you plan to be creative and build a cottage-style shed, you may be better off hiring a professional. From experience, this will save you time and money in the long run as it will ensure that the job gets done correctly the first time!

A backyard shed no longer needs to be used simply for storage. These structures are now an easy and economical option for those of you wanting a guest cottage, playhouse, reading room, arts and crafts room or sitting room in your backyard. With the addition of windows, decorative siding or roofing, porches, and doors, your old shed will transform into a lovely little cottage that will enhance the character of your home.
