Outdoor Potting Sheds – Organizing A Potting Shed, The Heart Of Your Garden

Outdoor potting sheds are often a central feature in a garden, as many plants begin their lives in a pot within them and gardeners tend to spend many hours toiling away inside of them. They’re generally crowded little outdoor buildings, crammed full with pots of all shapes and sizes, soil, rocks, seeds, and other must-have gardening materials.

In fact, an outdoor potting shed is often considered the heart of the garden; the place that reflects the gardener. That being said, although each potting shed may be different and the things within it might vary, there are a few mainstays of any garden potting shed; things that should be inside of every one of them.

All potting sheds need light, whether that light is provided by decorative windows or skylights or bright lights within the shed, it remains an important feature of the building. Your choice to have natural or simulated light will likely depend upon the type of storage shed you have chosen to use as your potting shed. It will also depend upon where your shed is positioned in your backyard or garden and how much light is available in that place.

All garden sheds, including potting styles, should also be equipped with potting benches, upon which you can tend to your seedlings and take care of your growing plants. You can purchase lovely potting benches from a gardening store, or you can easily make one yourself using an old table or scraps of discarded wood. You should also plan to install some form of storage unit, as tools and materials always end up taking over much of the space within a potting shed. Additionally, access to water must be nearby the outside of your garden shed.

What About The Outside Of My Potting Shed?

Although many of the things you find within potting sheds are similar, the exteriors of them can often be completely different. Some people are fortunate enough to have outdoor sheds that were built by previous owners of their homes, many of which are rustic and charming buildings.

Other folks have sheds that they built from scratch with their own two hands (good for you!) or prefab sheds that they put together on a Saturday afternoon. Regardless of what type of shed you have, it can be used as a potting shed. The exterior of your shed matters little to what goes on inside its doors, so be creative, decorate to your liking and make your potting or garden shed look any way that appeals to you.

Storage and potting sheds are important to many gardeners and can often be the central part of a garden. Spend some time thinking about how you want to set up the interior of your shed and make all your materials easily accessible to you. Aside from that, choose a shed that’s structurally suitable and appealing to your style.
