July 14, 2004 Wood Shed – A Storage Building To Store Your Wood Supply
A wood shed is an excellent idea for those of you who love the smell and sound of a fire crackling in the fireplace. One of the coziest things to do is curl up in front of a warm fire with some hot chocolate and cookies and talk the night away with friends and family. Unfortunately, if your wood has not been properly stored, your fire will be short-lived and you’ll be left sitting in a cold room. We don’t want that, do we? A wood shed will save you from this misfortune by keeping your wood safe and dry all year long so that you can continue enjoying those beautiful fires. A wood shed is a simple and quick project that needs not take too much time or break the bank. Most wood sheds are small, uninsulated buildings attached to your home, although they can also be detached. Some are designed to have airflow through the structure, usually under the eaves, however this is not necessary as long as the wood is properly dried prior to being stacked in the shed. Some consideration should be given to the size of your wood shed before you begin building it. For instance, it is advisable that your shed be large enough to store a year’s supply of wood. Additionally, you may want to think about adding a little space to be used for wood splitting inside. Fires need small kindling in order to start and it is miserable to have to stand outside chopping wood in the dead of winter. Once your wood shed is built, be sure to completely dry out your wood before stacking it inside. Wood must be below 20% moisture prior to being stacked otherwise it develops diseases and is more prone to bug infestations. Additionally, wood will not dry once it is stacked densely and we all know how poorly wet wood burns! You may also want to consider organizing your shed into piles of different types of wood. For example, you could have your main pile of wood, another pile of kindling, a pile of soft wood such as birch and poplar, which are good for short hot fires and a last pile for the large dense wood that is impossible to split. These pieces of wood are good for long burn fires one cold winter nights. Again, to reiterate an earlier note, you should also consider making space for a chopping area so that you do not need to leave your wood shed to cut wood. A wood shed can be built to suit your taste and style. As most sheds are either attached to your home or are close by, you may want to build one that matches the look of your own house. Many options are available for size and design, so do some research; i.e., type outdoor storage shed cedar into a web browser, look around and you will undoubtedly find a shed that suits your taste. We have no doubt that you will find this addition to your home extremely helpful! About The Author: By: Erin McMillan |
