Sun Dials – Man's First Clocks Make Cool Garden Conversation Pieces

Have you ever stopped to ponder the fact that sun dials were essentially man’s first clock? Has it ever occurred to you that there was a time when people had to depend on the sun to find out what time it was? It’s quite remarkable if you stop to think about it, that for most of history the sun and the stars governed time.

Can you imagine living without the convenience of your watch? I know I certainly can’t. Of course, the idea of modern-day clocks ever becoming obsolete is next to impossible, but the notion of it still got me thinking about how a sun dial works and why anyone would want one in their yard.

At one time or another, most of us have seen a sundial. We recognize it as a metal dial plate that is marked with hour lines. On top of that is a large, inclined edge that people who are knowledgeable about sundials call a “gnomon.”

The slanted edge of the gnomon is called the “style.” The style is the part that produces the shadow, which is used to tell time. It is positioned parallel to the earth’s axis and points towards the sky where the sun rotates clockwise around it. Throughout the day as the sun moves, the shadow changes on the gnomon, thus indicating the time of day.

These Ancient Time-Pieces Evoke History And Charm In Gardens

Sounds simple doesn’t it? Unfortunately, a sundial is rarely accurate and unless you have yours personally made for a particular spot, the time it shows will likely be incorrect. The problem of inaccuracy is the reason that functional sundials were superseded by more exact methods of telling time.

That being said however, sundials have instead become extremely popular ornamental pieces. Many people are now placing them in their yards for decoration! Why you ask? Well, not only are they beautiful, but they also evoke a sense of history and old-world charm that many other garden ornaments cannot.

If you ever have the time, look up the history of the sundial and you will see that it is rich and interesting. The fact that people used to use these gorgeous pieces to tell time is incredible, which is why so many people are now using them as decoration. Their presence is strong and is sure to attract your neighbors and visitors attention. What’s more, your friends and family will have fun trying to tell time on them! They’re a wonderful conversation piece and are a handsome addition to any garden.

A sundial, while perhaps not the most accurate way to tell time, is still a lovely, enchanting addition to any yard. Its presence will attract passers-by and will evoke conversation and stories. They’re dramatic and lovely and are sure to enhance the look of your home and garden.
