Garden Trellis – Enhance Your Garden With Modern Trellises

A garden trellis is a fantastic way to enhance the look of your garden. It gives an air of permanency and stability to your landscaping, as well as adding a touch of romance to your home. Designing and planting an outdoor trellis is an easy project that you can do yourself that is also inexpensive and easy to maintain.

Garden trellises generally have a wooden, cast iron, or metal structure as its base. These structures can be in the form of an archway or may simply be a vertical pole. You can purchase trellises at garden centers or hardware stores. If you are interested in being a little more creative, try scouring flea markets or garage sales for old grates, gates and fences. These pieces can also be used for trellises and will give your garden an antique, rustic look.

Keep in mind, however, that plants and vines grow tightly around a trellis making it difficult to maintain the structure. If you choose a wood trellis, make sure to use pressure treated wood and if you opt to use an older gate or fence as your support, be sure that it is in good condition.

When choosing flowers and plants for your garden trellis, make sure to use ones that will flourish in your area. Additionally, if you plan on moving your trellis to a different location in your garden at some point, be sure to plant annuals around it, which will make it easier to move.

Everything From A Bean Trellis To Climbing Rose Bush Trellises

Your new trellis is ready to go once you have chosen your structure and your plants. If you plan to put your trellis close to your home, ensure that you leave enough room between the two structures for air ventilation. This will help keep your plants healthy as well as eliminate any mildew or mould problems on your home.

To plant your flowers, vegetables or vines, dig a hole approximately 6 inches away from the trellis. Take fabric plant ties (or pieces of old pantyhose) and tie the stems of the plants loosely to the support. Once your plants begin to grow, trim them back regularly so that they continue growing in an upright fashion. Be frugal when pruning your trellis plants as any mistake or over-cutting is hard to disguise.

Your metal arches and trellises should not take long to become a beautiful standing structure in your garden. They are easy to maintain and the vines should be looked after with the same care as your other garden flowers and plants. We know this project will add charm to your garden and that you will enjoy your trellis for years to come!
