Choosing The Correct Size – How Big Is Too Big?

When it comes to selecting the correct size for a weathervane, a little thought and research should go into the final decision. You must first decide if you’re going to have a cupola, or not. Once that decision is made, you can go into more specific height and width details.

If you’re going to have a cupola, you need to ensure that it is the correct size. Essentially, most companies agree that for every one inch of cupola base, you should have a foot of uninterrupted roofline. If you are unsure, then it’s always better to go a size bigger. Once you have selected the cupola you like, you can then choose your weathervane. The weathervane should be approximately the same size as the cupola, or within 6” either way.

If you’re not going to have a cupola, then consider how big you want your weather vane to appear from a distance. The further away you are from your rooftop, the smaller the weathervane will appear; therefore, the bigger it is, the more presence it will have. If you decide on purchasing a smaller weather vane, then it should be positioned closer to the ground so that you can admire it without having to strain your eyes. Lastly, scale your weathervane to the roofline. For every inch of weathervane you have, allow one foot of roofline.

These are simply the basic guidelines when choosing a size for your weather vane. Obviously, the bigger it is, the better it will be seen; however, no matter what size of weather vane you purchase, you can rest assured that it will add charm and whimsy to your home for years to come.
