Weathervanes – Add Country Charm To Your Home

Weathervanes are a lovely addition to any home or backyard. They’re simple, elegant pieces that add a touch of country charm, no matter where they’re placed. What’s more, they’re a fabulous way of expressing your love of something, whether it’s roosters, cows, pigs, boats, cars or lighthouses. There’s a weathervane for everyone! If you’ve been thinking of adding a weather vane to your home, or if you’re interested in learning more about these charming items, then read on.

Weather vanes, also called weathercocks and wind vanes, come in a variety of styles, the most popular of which is the weather vane rooster. Weather vane roosters are often a standard feature on country barns and stables. A rooster however, is certainly not the only choice you’ll have when shopping for your new weathercock. There are literally hundreds of varieties of weather vanes.

There are cats, dogs, exotic animals, birds, farm equipment (like tractors), people, boats, trains, and of course the traditional arrow weather cock. The possibilities are endless! What’s more, vanes come in a variety of material, including aluminum, copper, cast iron and brass. Others have an antiqued look, which is beautiful if you’re going for a rustic, old-world look. Regardless of your personal style or taste, you’ll surely find a weathercock to suit you.

How Wind Vanes Work

Historically, the wind vane dates back to early Greek, Roman and Viking times and many people say they were first used as a way to honor gods and nobles. Essentially though, they were one of the first instruments used when people began to study and understand climate conditions. How they work, is that basically, they’re an instrument used to indicate wind direction.

In theory, weather vanes are described as asymmetrical shaped objects that are mounted at their centre of gravity so that they can swing about freely on a perpendicular axis. There are two general features that are required to make all wind instruments work: the ornament must have unequal area on either side of its centre and it must have equal mass on either side of its centre. The combination of these two elements is what makes windvanes turn in the direction of the wind.

Whether or not you fully understand the physics of them, windvanes look beautiful. They’re a lovely, charming addition to any home, garden, shed or barn and also a great way to express you love of something. If you want to add some country elegance, as well as personalize your home a little, then choose a windvane. They’re traditional pieces that never go out of style and whose place in your home will be admired by all.
