Sept 24, 2004 Bat Houses – Help Eliminate Mosquitoes From Your Backyard
How bat houses helped save my children from insect bites…. The mosquitoes were landing on my two year old son's arms and legs. Jackson cried out to me and swatted toward the insects nervously. Though tiny, they managed to quickly place a few bites on his tender skin. Next came his somber weeping and disappointed look, as if to ask me how the world could create such things? Did you think we were camping or picnicking at a local lake? No! This was a regular occurrence in our backyard until we erected a few bat boxes last spring. A bat house can be your savior too! Last summer I was so frustrated with mosquitoes ruining our family's evenings on our deck that I decided to do a little research. Through reading some articles I discovered that houses for bats are easily erected in back yards and they attract bats by the dozens and even by the hundreds! A typical bat can eat up to 2,000 insects per night! And, a typical bat box that is approximately 24 inches tall and 17 inches wide can house up to 75 bats. If one bat could eat 2,000 insects I quickly reasoned that 75 bats would eat 150,000 insects and if I erected 5 or more houses in my yard and on my house …. That would make an amazing 750,000+ insects disappearing per night! Good-bye mosquitoes I thought! Online Gardening Stores Carry An Amazing Selection Of Bat BoxesI found an amazing selection of bat boxes online. There were plain cedar style houses to beautiful decorative ones with multi color selections available. Each style of bat box offered a warm and watertight home providing divided living quarters for bats and a bottom landing pad. All of the bathouses were ready to mount on a pole or a tree. I am now the proud owner of 6 beautiful bat boxes that are scattered from the eaves of my house to a pole in my lawn and hanging from trees in my yard. My family experienced a great many Indian summer evenings on our deck at the end of summer last year - relatively mosquito free! I am thinking of adding a couple more decorative houses for our friendly bats this spring, and we are looking forward to many enjoyable barbeques on our deck this coming summer. My son wants to build a bat box as a woodworking project too… I guess he appreciates what the bats are doing in our yard too! I encourage you to fill your garden with homes for bats to help eliminate mosquitoes in your backyard. Go ahead and have fun shopping for bat boxes online. You will be amazed at the selection and prices available at online stores.
