June 17, 2004 Bluebird House – Attract Stunning And Colorful Bluebirds
Install a bluebird house and you are sure to attract numerous beautiful new visitors to your backyard. Bluebirds are stunning animals with gorgeous blue feathers who enjoy open spaces with nearby cover. They feed mostly on insects, bugs, caterpillars, and berries. If bluebirds have been seen in your area, consider setting up a bluebird feeder to attract them. Bluebirds will mainly use a bluebird house in the spring, however fall is also a good time to install them because they have been known to nest as early as February. In the winter, bluebird houses will be used to shield the birds from the elements and will allow the birds to roost together, sharing body heat for warmth. A bluebird house will replace natural holes in trees made by woodpeckers and other birds. Unfortunately, with the rise in forested areas in North America, bluebirds have been left with few places to nest. Consequently, there has been a recent decline in the population of bluebirds, which has caused many people to erect bluebird houses in their backyards, parks, golf courses, and nature trails. Fortunately, bluebirds have easily adopted these new man-made homes and their population is once again on the rise! A bluebird house must be the proper dimension in order for bluebirds to nest there. You can find countless specs and plans for houses on the Internet or at your local bird store. There are two basic designs of bluebird houses: the traditional square house (that resembles all other birdhouses) and the Peterson house, which has a sloped floor and roof. Both will attract bluebirds. If you decide to put up more than one house, be sure to space them at least 100 feet apart, as bluebirds are territorial animals. When erecting the bluebird house, be sure to always face it so that it looks out onto an open area. As we mentioned before, bluebirds love open spaces but also need cover close by. Additionally, be sure to check the inside of the house on a regular basis as sparrows and other small birds will sometimes take up occupancy in bluebird houses. Wasps can sometimes become a problem and will turn bluebirds away from the house. If you spot a wasp’s nest nearby, spray and remove it. Placing a bluebird house in your backyard or in an area near your home will surely attract these stunning and colorful animals to nest. It is an easy project to complete and in doing so, you will not only add enjoyment to your life, you will also be improving the lives of these beautiful birds. Furthermore, if taken care of and maintained, bluebirds will often return to the same bird houses several times to nest and lay their eggs. Thus, you will be able to enjoy their company over the course of numerous years!
