Nov 25, 2004 Garden Wren Birdhouses – Bring the Gift of Song into your Garden
Erecting garden wren birdhouses in your backyard will entice these friendly birds to your house. Wrens are found throughout most of North America. They are chubby little birds with slender, slightly curved bills and are extremely inquisitive little animals who love to chatter. They are characterized by their loud melodious songs. By placing a garden wren birdhouse in your yard, you will quickly get the attention of these delightful birds and in no time the back of your home will be filled with lively bird banter and beautiful song. Wren birdhouses are not complicated structures, as wrens are not picky about where they nest. In fact, wrens are renowned for roosting in odd places such as boots, mailboxes, car radiators and garages. The structural requirements of a typical wren house are a box height of around 6-8 inches, a floor size of 4x4 inches, and an entrance hole of about 1 inch, which should be placed approximately 4-6 inches above the floor of the house. Additionally, wren houses should be installed about 5-10 feet above ground to ensure that predators such as cats and raccoons can’t reach it. You’ll find plenty of house designs and pattern online or at your local gardening store. There are also step-by-step kits available that will provide you with the materials, instructions and guidelines for building the perfect wren birdhouse. Move Over Guys; The Girls Are In Charge Here!Wren bird houses are often more successful if several of them are placed in one vicinity. This is because in the spring, when wrens come to roost, the males will construct about a dozen nests in the territory they have selected as theirs. Later, when the females arrive, the male will court the female by taking her to all his nests and presenting her with his work. She will then select one of this roosting spots and only then will they mate. Thus, if you want wrens to roost in your back yard, you should try to erect several houses so that the male will have plenty of places to build nests before the female arrives. Wren bird houses are also more likely to have frequent visitors if they are situated in a residential area, near a park, farmland or woodland. Wrens are insect eaters, so areas that provide them with caterpillars, grasshoppers, spiders, and snails are their most favorable visiting spots. What’s more, wrens build their nests from materials such as grass, plants, leaves, feathers, and twigs, so regions abundant with trees and plants are preferable. A wren birdhouse is a lovely addition to your yard or garden. Not only are they charming, but once constructed, your backyard will light up with the happy chatter and melodies of wrens. It is truly a delightful and pleasing addition to any home.
