Hummingbird House – A Nesting Place For Your Hummingbirds

A hummingbird house is the perfect way to watch these incredible animals right in your own backyard! Do you love hummingbirds? Do you already have a hummingbird feeder hanging outside your window but are now looking for new ways to attract these lovely creatures to your home? Well this is the solution for you! A hummingbird feeder will not only draw more hummers to your house for your viewing pleasure, it will also provide these feathered friends with a comfortable place to nest.

A hummingbird house is very small and easy to mount. A female hummingbird’s highest priority is the safety of her eggs and chicks, so houses must be installed under the least windy eave of your home. As you may or may not know, hummingbirds are known for nesting in odd places such as under porch and patio fixtures, around sheltered electrical wiring, on sheltered fences, and inside garages.

These odd places are because hummingbird nests, as well as their eggs, are very small and are extremely susceptible to falling to the ground under windy conditions. Thus, making sure your hummingbird house is mounted in a sheltered area is crucial to its success. Additionally, be sure that you do not mount the house in an area where the temperature rises above 96 degrees F. If the temperature does climb above this, the eggs will heat up killing the embryo inside.

A hummingbird house created in nature will almost always be found on the fork of a branch, or on some other stable support that gives the impression of being a tree branch. Additionally, the female hummingbird will look for a support that has anchor points around which she can wrap her nest. Hummingbird houses available for purchase look just like natural hummingbird nesting places.

A hummingbird house will have a fork on which the nest will sit and anchor points around which the hummingbird will secure her nest; they are stable, exact, and when mounted in the appropriate place they are the prime location for hummingbirds to nest and lay eggs. Once your house is installed and a hummingbird has chosen it for nesting, construction will generally take around 5 days and the hummer will bring materials to the site at a rate of approximately thirty-four trips per hour.

Mounting a hummingbird house will provide mother hummingbirds a comfortable and safe place to lay her eggs. She and her eggs will be out of the wind and rain and chicks will have a better chance at survival. Additionally, humming bird houses provide protection from predatory animals such as snakes, cats, raccoons, and other birds. They are a wonderful alternative for hummingbirds that sometimes have trouble finding a place to nest and they will provide you with hours of natural entertainment right in your own backyard!
