Oct 24, 2004 Painted Birdhouses – Bring Some Color Into Your Garden
Painted birdhouses are a decorative and adorable way to attract lovely birds to your yard. They are also a wonderful way to add color to your home. Many come in bright colors that can bring to life your garden and make your backyard brilliant and cheery. As you will see, though, depending on whether your birdhouse will be functional or not, bright colors are not always in the best interest of our feathered friends. Regardless, painted birdhouses are a charming addition to any backyard. The selection of painted birdhouses is endless. Architecturally, there are houses designed to look like churches, windmills, inns, salons, log cabins, fire stations, lighthouses, and schoolhouses, just to name a few. And of course, these exquisite birdhouses come in all colors of the rainbow. Truly, regardless of your personal taste and style, there is a painted birdhouse for you! Also, many are available for viewing and purchase online, so you can peruse the thousands (literally) of designs right from the comfort of your own home! As mentioned previously, painted birdhouses can be bright and colorful. However, unless you plan to close up the door of the birdhouse and only use it as a decorative piece (which many people do), you are better off looking for a birdhouse painted in neutral tones. This is because bright colors do not match the natural surroundings of birds and although they are dazzling and cheery, they could attract predators. If you look at the settings in which birds typically build their nests, you’ll notice that they are usually camouflaged and are barely visible within their environment. Hence, colors like brown, beige, tan and soft green are more practical and will help to keep birds safe in your backyard. When shopping for painted birdhouses, be sure to inquire about the type of paint and oil used in their construction. It’s advisable to stay away from lead-based paint, as it is toxic to animals and humans. You’re better off purchasing birdhouses that have been painted with latex paint, as it is generally safe and non-toxic. Additionally, make sure that only natural oils have been used on the birdhouse and that only the exterior of the birdhouse has been treated. Birds will peck away at the interior of a birdhouse, so it is best to keep that area free of paint or oil. Painted birdhouses are a lovely and attractive addition to any home. If you’re simply looking for a way to brighten your yard and are not planning to use the birdhouse for birds, then choose a bright, cheerful color to liven up your house. Conversely, if you want birds to nest in your painted birdhouse, you should stick with neutral, natural colors, in order to discourage predators. Aside from those two simple rules, just have fun and be creative when purchasing painted or decorative birdhouses and enjoy their lovely presence in your backyard.
