Sept 9, 2004 Gazing Globes – A Beautiful Garden Accessory With Magical History
So what are gazing globes? You may be asking yourself that question and if so, you are not alone. I myself had never heard of these things until recently, but once I did a little research, I was inspired by their rich history. Since their inception into our world these beautiful globes have been surrounded by mystical stories and traditions. They have also been known by several names. Gazing Globe, Sphere of Light, Rose Ball, Good Luck Globe or Globe of Happiness – No Matter what you call them, their history is magical and they are a beautiful addition to your home or garden. People have used them for many things and believed them to hold countless mysterious powers. The one (and only) thing that has remained the same through the ages is that people have always looked upon a gazing ball as a thing of beauty. It has always stood as a symbol of light and happiness, which is why today more and more people have again begun placing them in their homes and gardens. Once almost forgotten, gazing balls and globes are now making a comeback in homes across the country. Want to know why? Read on to discover the magical and wonderful stories behind the gazing spheres that are now appearing in our neighborhoods. These Beautiful Garden Accessories First Appeared In The 13th CenturyThe gazing sphere or globe made its first appearance somewhere in the 13th century, in Venice Italy. They were hand-blown by skilled craftsmen and as the story goes, were first named spheres of light. Many noble kings, queens and members of the aristocracy adorned their homes with these spheres of light, thus earning them a reputation for holding magical powers of luck and happiness. It was said that anyone who placed one in their home would be blessed with prosperity and riches. As time went on, stories about the purpose of the globes changed. Many people believed that their powers could ward off witches. It was alleged that placing a globe at the entrance of your house would scare a witch away because she would not be able to get past her own ghastly reflection. Others believed that gazing spheres and globes were a tool for self-reflection and connection with the universe. They would stare into the globes at their own reflections and feel as though they were at peace with the world. Less spiritual people used the globes for practical things. For instance, they were placed at the front gate of a house so that the dwellers could see who was calling, before the caller could see them. Other people placed them in the front entrance of their homes so they could see what was going on at their entranceway, without being seen themselves. Of course, more mythical tales have been told about these beautiful garden gazing globes as well. The most famous of those says that fairies were unable to see each other and thus used the reflection of the globes to see one another and the world around them. This story may have spawned people’s impulse to place them in the garden. Who knows the real history behind the gazing ball? Perhaps no one does. On the other hand, maybe some of the stories are true. Thus placing one in your home or garden today may just bring you a little luck, happiness or prosperity.
