Greenhouse Watering Systems – More Important Than You Think!

Greenhouse watering systems are an extremely important aspect to greenhouse gardening, in fact, they can be even more important than ventilation or temperature. Believe it or not, incorrect watering kills more plants than anything else and watering causes more problems to green house gardeners than any other feature of greenhouses This is why it is so important to be knowledgeable and careful about the greenhouse watering system that you use.

Plants are made up of 90% water. The water is used to carry food from the roots to the other parts of the plant. It’s a little like the human body; we cannot function without adequate water and neither can a plant. Therefore, when planning out the irrigation system in your greenhouse, you need to take into consideration the unique needs of your plants inside of it.

Watering systems are available in various different types. There are self watering trays, seep hoses, drip and spray systems, drip grow-bag kits, overhead sprays and misting units. Each type of sprinkler or watering unit has its benefits as well as its drawbacks. Additionally, as all plants are different, some species will prefer one watering system over another. If the temperature outside is quite hot, green houses function better if the floor has been dampened down. Additionally, when the weather is very dry, it is best to water in the evening rather than in the heat of the day. Keep in mind also that mature greenhouse plants need more watering than young immature ones. Finally, keep to a regular schedule and keep track of your last watering. A little water too frequently can be the demise of many plants.

Greenhouses are a fun and enjoyable project for almost any gardener. However, they can be very frustrating when watering and irrigation systems become an issue. Therefore, do your research and get to know the needs of your plants before deciding on a watering unit. Once you have the unit, use it properly and maintain it. If you do that, you’ll likely end up with healthy, happy plants!
