Hobby Greenhouse Heaters – A Must for all Greenhouse Gardeners

Hobby greenhouse heaters maintain the temperature of the greenhouse and ensure that plants do not freeze throughout the colder months. As most greenhouse gardeners know, there is more to green house gardening than simply putting your plants in greenhouses and leaving them there. There is a lot of maintenance required and other materials are needed in order to have successful green houses. Therefore, one of the most important things in a hobby greenhouse is a heater.  And as all of you greenhouse gardeners know, temperature is one of the most important factors in the success of a greenhouse.

A hobby greenhouse heater can be of four basic types. It can be heated by coal, electricity, gas, or oil. Additionally, many people use varieties of space heaters, forced-air heaters, hot water or steam systems, or electric radiant heaters. The heater you choose should depend mostly upon the size of your greenhouse and the amount of heat that is required to warm it.

As a cautionary note, if you are going to use gas, oil, or coal heaters, you also must also have a very good ventilation system that provides fresh air to the greenhouse. Otherwise, you could end up dealing with carbon monoxide or ethylene accumulation.

The easiest way to heat your greenhouse is with an electric heater, as all you need to do is turn a dial! It’s much less of a hassle than any other heat source and is usually the safest way to heat your greenhouse. The only complaint people have about electric heaters is that they can get very expensive, especially in the winter.

What is the Optimal Temperature for my Hobby Greenhouse?

Most plants grow best at a temperature anywhere between 10C and 29.4C. This is quite a large difference in temperature, which means that you really do need to know the needs of your plants in order to know how warm your greenhouse should be.

For instance, seedlings tend to thrive in warmer climates, while more mature plants prefer cooler temperatures. Additionally, difference species of plants require different levels of heat. The best advice for maintaining the perfect temperature level is to know exactly what your plants need in order to survive.

If one of your favorite hobbies is greenhouse gardening, then you should definitely consider the heat supply you’re using. Temperature is one of the most important aspects of a successful greenhouse and any veteran greenhouse gardener will tell you that without adequate heat, your plants will suffer. Just like you, plants need to be warm and comfortable. So when planning out your greenhouse, make sure to arrange for sufficient heat.
