Solar Greywater Greenhouses – Energy Efficient and Earth Friendly

When I first heard about solar greywater greenhouses, I was confused. “What on earth is that?” I wondered. Once I began looking into what a solar greywater greenhouse was, I learned that they’re actually quite a simple type of greenhouse. That being said, however, they’re still not that easy to describe because there are quite a few elements that go into their operation. Thus, here is the simplest breakdown of what they are and how they work.

To begin, most of you likely know how a solar green house works. Essentially, they differ from regular greenhouses because they have glazing, which is intended to receive maximum solar heat throughout the winter. They use heat-storing materials that allow them to retain solar heat; they have large amounts of insulation in areas of the greenhouse where there is little or no direct sunlight. They also use glazing material and installation methods that minimize heat loss and they rely primarily on natural ventilation for summer cooling.

Sun powered green houses rely primarily upon their location in relation to the sun as well as the glazing materials used in their construction for their success.

So now you’re likely wondering what a greywater greenhouse is. In order to understand that, you basically just need to know what grey water is. Greywater is any water that has been used in the home, except water from toilets. You see 50-80% of waste-water comes from sink, shower and laundry water that is discarded.

Believe it or not, plants thrive on water that contains small bits of compost and therefore it’s a waste to use great quantities of drinking water to irrigate your gardens. Rain-water also falls under the category of greywater and if collected, is a wonderful way to water your gardens.

Why Use a Greywater Solar Greenhouse?

We all know that our earth is suffering from overuse of electricity, water and other natural resources. Therefore, establishing a solar powered, greywater greenhouse in your yard is a great way to help ease the harmful environmental effects that a regular greenhouse has on our earth.

A solar powered greenhouse uses no electricity and depends entirely on the sun for its heat, therefore eliminating any use of electricity. It will also lower your hydro bill! A greywater greenhouse uses less fresh water; it has lower energy and chemical use; it puts less strain on septic tanks and treatment plants; and it allows for effective groundwater recharge and recovery. The combination of a solar powered and greywater greenhouse is simply magic to the earth!

Solar powered greywater greenhouses are the new wave of greenhouse existence. They’re an energy-efficient and earth-friendly way of gardening in a greenhouse and are just as effective for plant growth as any standard green house. They’re revolutionary! Check them out online and do a little research. You’ll find that you could be doing your part to help conserve our earth’s natural resources by using one of these innovative green houses.
