Outdoor Fireplace Chimineas – Creative Ways of Using A Chiminea

Outdoor fireplace chimineas are an outdoor fireplace made of clay, cast iron, aluminum or copper. These practical, and yet, whimsical fireplaces originated in Mexico in the 17th century and were initially used to bake bread. Though modern chimineas are slightly more sophisticated, they are still fabricated using the same methods and materials as the originals. Most home owner's today still seek an outdoor fireplace chiminea with an authentic Mexican look!

Clay chimineas are manufactured in two pieces, the chimney and the base. Each is dried separately and then they are joined together to make one piece. The entire thing is then air dried for several more days and then baked in a 900-degree kiln. Once the clay has cooled, the outside is painted with bright colors to make it look unique and rustic.

Cast iron and copper chimineas are manufactured in much the same way, as two separate peices.  They are then welded together to make one fireplace unit, often with authentic hammer marks in the metal.  The choice of a metal or clay chiminea is purely based upon personal preference.  Both styles are as popular as each other.

Chimineas come in various sizes ranging from table-top stoves, which can be used as candle holders to large size stoves that weigh hundreds of pounds, which are used for fires and for cooking. No matter what size or color of chiminea that you choose, they are always a unique and special addition to your home.

Chimineas From Mexico – Multiple Uses From Cooking To Gardening

The primary use of a chiminea is for outdoor fires and cooking. In fact it is highly dangerous to use chimineas indoors. However, if you do not plan to burn anything inside of yours and want to use it as an accent piece or as a decorative ornament, there are several safe indoor uses that are quickly becoming popular. Several magazines and television programs have suggested using chimineas for everything from a towel holder to a plant stand. We have even heard of people using them as pet houses!

Some homeowners who have a room designed in a Southwestern theme are using them to hold wood beside their wood burning stoves as well as for candleholders. It sounds unconventional, but these beautiful pieces can be used in a multitude of creative ways inside your home if you’re willing to be a little imaginative.

If having a fireplace chiminea outside your home doesn’t suit your fancy and you aren’t keen on having fires in your backyard, there are still countless ways to make use of chimineas. For instance in your garden! We have seen some innovative uses for chimineas outdoors that do not involve using them for burning.

For example, many people have opted to insert a garden trellis and beautiful flowers, such as sunflowers into the top. Others have chosen to have vines or plants pouring out of the mouth. Yet another artistic use for chimineas is to place one on its side to look as though it has fallen over. Filled with topsoil and colorful plants, this creative idea will give your garden a romantic and distinctive look!

Your outdoor chiminea can be used in a multitude of original and inventive ways. Though they are beautiful when used for their original purpose of burning, cooking and as a patio heater, they are quickly becoming decorative pieces throughout people’s homes. So don’t be afraid to try new things and be creative! Just remember, if you choose to use chiminea’s inside your home or garden, do not use them as fireplaces. Use them strictly as decorative pieces. Other than that, have fun with these beautiful clay, copper and cast iron fireplaces - and be original!
