Koi Fish – Treat Yourself To Beautiful Koi In Your Garden Pond

Koi Fish come in a very wide range of colors and are an incredibly beautiful addition to any garden pond. They actually do originate from the Orient and it is perhaps hard to believe that they are related to the plainer, dull colored common carp. It's amazing what breeding with intent can produce.

As well as a having a wide range of colors, Koi also come in different sizes and shapes and have great variety in their markings and scales too. The sum of all these attributes is called their conformation, and it is these attributes that koi fishes are judged by at shows internationally.

The conformation of koi is what allows them to be categorized. It takes many years of practice and a good eye for detail to distinguish one of these fish from another. The preferred colors are red, white and black. It is also possible to get silver and blue tones and metallic colors too!

One of the most popular categories of koi is the kohaku; these are white with red markings. You may also have noticed another very popular color combination if you've ever closely observed a koi pond; that is the Sanke, which have a white body with red and black markings.

Unique Koi Colors; From Pale Blue To Yellow And Metallic Sparkly Scales!

A very beautiful and unique colored koi is the Asagi which are pale blue with red along their belly and fins. Showa have a mostly black body with red and white markings. Yamabuki are yellow. When you see the term Gin Rin it means that the diamond-shaped scales have a sparkly, glittering appearance, no matter the color of the fish!

Koi with scales that are black in the center are called Matsuba. Fish with metallic scales are called hikari and metallic koi that are only one color are called ogon or hikarimono. No matter what type or color of fish that you choose for your koi pond you will be sure to get many hybrids as babies. It is so much fun to watch for babies and see them grow!

You will be amazed at the selection of koi that are available at online stores, and at their availability and the ease of having them shipped directly to your house!
