You will need to buy the proper neutralizing equipment to remove these chemicals well in advance to the introduction of fish to your pond. It is usually recommended that you allow two weeks for the water to sit and be properly neutralized.

Choose Koi And Goldfish With Your Pond Size And Local Climate In Mind

When choosing koi fish and goldfish choose them with your pond size and local climate in mind. If you have a very deep backyard pond then it is okay to have larger fish as they will need deeper water to "hibernate" in during the cold winters. If you have a smaller pond then be sure to choose smaller pond fish, koi would not be recommended as they can grow to be 3 feet long! Goldfish tend to stay smaller, only up to about 10 inches or so in length.

A good rule of thumb for deciding on which kind of pond fish to buy for backyard ponds is:

• For Goldfish to supply at least 5 gallons of water per inch of fish.
• For Koi fish to supply at least 10 gallons of water per inch of fish.
• Note: Pond fish longer than 6 inches need substantially more water!
